What Does It Mean to “Test the Spirits”?

Hey y’all, I just need to share something that’s been heavy on my heart.

But seriously, I was scrolling on TikTok, and I kept seeing those videos: “God told me to tell you…” or “I don’t know who this is for, but…” You know the ones. And here’s the issue—too many people are taking those words and running with them without testing the spirit behind them.

1 John 4:1 tells us to test the spirits to see if they are from God because MANY false prophets are out here. And let’s be real, not everyone is speaking from the Holy Spirit.

The Rise of False Prophets in the Age of Social Media

A lot of these so-called “messages from God” are NOT from the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They are from the god of THIS world. Yes, I said it.

The Lord put this on my spirit today: Some people are using God’s name for clout, followers, likes, and engagement.They are not being led by the Holy Spirit.

How to Know If a Message Is Truly from God

Not every word spoken over you is meant for you. Just because someone says, “This is your confirmation,” doesn’t mean it actually is. Take EVERYTHING back to God.

Even the things I say! I am not above correction, and no one else is either. Matthew 24:11 warns us that many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. We are in those times RIGHT NOW.

Jesus Himself warned us that in the last days, many would come in His name, leading people astray. That’s exactly what’s happening today. Social media has given false teachers a massive platform, and too many people are accepting their words without discernment.

Some people are out here using God’s name to gain subscribers, followers, and likes.They’re chasing influence, not truth. That’s why it’s CRUCIAL to test the spirits behind what you’re consuming.

Steps to Strengthen Your Spiritual Discernment

  • Pray for wisdom – Ask the Holy Spirit for discernment.
  • Compare it to Scripture – If it doesn’t align with God’s Word, it’s not from Him.
  • Look at the fruit – Does the person’s life and message reflect Jesus?
  • Take it to God – Before accepting a word, bring it to the Lord in prayer.

Final Thoughts: Not Every Word Is for You

Be mindful as you scroll, as you listen, and as you live your life. You do NOT have to receive every word spoken over you. If it’s not for you, it’s not for you. Period.
